What is remote support? Is it secure?

  • With remote support I am able to fix some computer problems by accessing your computer over the Internet. Many computer problems require long diagnostic scans, so significant time can be saved if the system is set up to run them when I am unable to pick up the computer right away.
  • The software used to do this is called UltraVNC. It is open source software, which means anyone can look over the program’s code to ensure that it is secure and doesn’t contain any viruses. The version of UltraVNC available for download from my site does not change any files on your computer and is configured to only allow you to initiate a connection to my computer. Once the connection is closed, the software removes itself. UltraVNC uses industry standard 128-bit encryption.

Why should I choose pick up and drop off service?
While some computer problems can be resolved at your home or office with little time, the majority of problems can take a long time to find and resolve. Consider the time it takes to do some basic diagnostic work on a modern computer vs the time it took 5 years ago:

Procedure 5 years ago Today
Virus Scan 1 hour 3 hours
Adware Scan 1 hour 3 hours
Memory Scan (for errors) 10 minutes 30 minutes
Hard Drive Scan (for errors) 30 minutes 2 hours

Due to larger hard drives, more memory, an increasing number of viruses to scan for, diagnostics require increasing amounts of time to complete. While it used to be possible to service computers properly on site, it now takes too much time to resolve most problems.
